Wedgwood Dark Blue Dip Jasper Ware Brewster Sugar Box features the bas-relief of Sacrifice to Ceres, the Goddess of Agriculture and Fertility. A sow was often sacrificed during a marriage ceremony as an offering to Ceres. This 115 year old Brewster shaped Sugar Box measures 3 1/4" tall x 3 5/8" diameter and is marked'Wedgwood England' in Serif Font which generally dates the piece to between the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891 and Wedgwood abandoning the'England' Only mark in 1905 for most general production pieces. The use of the'England' Only mark continued for some production after 1905. This piece has a chip on the inside rim of the base.
