James Tassie was one of the most celebrated modellers and engravers of the 18th century producing many notable works and exhibited at the Royal Academy for many years. The medallion is of slightly convex form and in green jasper dip. The top is fitted with a white metal hanger with loop which is quite unusual.
The item would be considered a too large to wear as general jewellery but perhaps it was just used on special occasion such as a mayoral chain would be. The reverse has the Wedgwood England impressed marks dating it around 1900. The original was produced in 1787, and the bas relief appears identical to the original, so it is likely this was produced from the original Tassie mould but in the late 19th century.
No notable faults, minor wear to metalwork. Height 10 cms (4 inches) excluding hanger.Width 7.5 cms (3.3 inches). Weight 122 grams (before packing).
