Additional Information: This piece is a wonderful example of Wedgwood's Jasperware technique in a piece of jewelry. This brooch also has a concealed bail so it can also be worn as a pendant (chain not included). The round piece of Lilac colored Jasperware is bezel set in a solid 14k yellow gold open filigree work setting with pin backing and bail. The applied white image is called sprigging and depicts Hercules and the Nemean Lion which was a popular classical motif that Wedgwood introduced in the 19th Century. Lilac is a rare color when it comes to Jasperware as its production was limited and intermittent.
It was originally produced only for bas-relief work from 1777 to about 1790, then in limited quantities in 1959. Wedgwood then put it into full production from 1960 to 1964 and it was re-introduced from 1980 to 1984.Finally, it was produced in limited quantities in 1989, 1990, and 1999. This piece, marked "Made in England" with the number 6JTC was most likely made between 1959 and 1964. This COLOR was also produced in a dipped version but this particular example is SOLID.
