Wedgwood Jasperware Tricolor Cache Pot-Mythical Neoclassical ca 1890s Victorian

  

Since the companys inception in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood and sons, the firm has been well known for high quality porcelains. Early in their history the company developed a type of stoneware, Jasper, which resembled a form of quartz, a semi precious stone.

Over the past 200+ years, the company has produced this type of stoneware in many different colors and combinations of colors. Usually found in one or two shades, a base hue with a different pigment of the bas-reliefs, ornamentations of figures, plants, animals, etc.

They also produced examples in multiple colors. These pieces are usually known as tricolor examples. I have owned Wedgwood jasperware with as many as five different pigments on one example. Although possibly produced earlier, I have seen examples created in the mid to late 1800s on into the 20th century.

This fine pot is marked Wedgewood and England only on the bottom, most likely produce sometime between 1891 and the early 1900s. It has a very unusual color combination of a white base with sage green garland and lilac colored figures. The vase stands 4 1/4 tall with an opening of 3 7/8 across.

The body swells to a diameter of approximately 4 1/4. These earlier examples rarely surface in the market today.

Thorough examination reveals no chips, cracks, damage or repairs. I will mention some faint discoloration on the outside in the white areas and on the inside from use, as pictured. I do not see any missing relief and very little if any crackling of the appliqué caused during production. A super nice example in a very rare color combination ready for any jasperware collection.
