RARE WEDGWOOD 19th CENTURY COFFEE POT with'SIBYL FINIAL. In very good condition & seldom available for sale this 19th century or earlier?? Cobalt blue Coffee Pot with Britannia grieving on one side & a Widow & Angel with a Shield with the name'S. I can see no chips, cracks except within the spout itself - but looks 100% perfect on the outside. The finial on the lid has a line going across Sibyl's legs possibly from an old repair (see photos 4 & 5). Please look carefully at my photos which best shows the items condition. The item measures 6.25 inches in height & is 6.5 inches across from edge of handle to end of spout. Any questions please ask, but I'm no expert! Any of a number of women believed to be oracles or prophetesses. One of the most famous being the sibyl of Cumae who guided Aeneas through the underworld, (also a witch, fortune-teller, or sorceress).

Others have gone off to the charity shops already! Note: As a general rule Wedgwood items before 1891 had no Country of origin impressed to their bases.

New Trade laws were introduced in the latter part of the 19th Century which compelled reputable makers to show the country of manufacture; so from 1891 the word'ENGLAND' was impressed in addition to the'WEDGWOOD' mark. This continued until 1908 from which time onwards the words'MADE IN ENGLAND' were impressed in all cases.
