Rare and exceptionally beautiful antique Wedgwood Jasperware Trophy Vase dating from the late 19th century, executed in the highly desirable classic sage green colour with applied white neoclassical relief decoration. This elegant vase features finely modelled twin handles, classical figures, ornamental trophies, and delicate decorative motifs characteristic of Wedgwood's most iconic Jasperware productions. The refined matte finish and crisp white relief work create a striking contrast that has made Jasperware one of the most celebrated ceramic styles in the world. The vase is further distinguished by its authentic original construction, including the central brass bolt and square nut securing the body to the pedestal - a classic manufacturing technique used by Wedgwood for complex trophy-shaped forms of this period. WEDGWOOD Jasperware was first introduced by Josiah Wedgwood in the late 18th century and quickly became one of the most recognisable and collectible ceramic styles worldwide.
Renowned for its elegant matte surface and finely detailed white relief scenes applied to coloured stoneware, antique Jasperware pieces remain highly sought after by collectors of fine English ceramics. The markings on the base help accurately date this vase. Wedgwood began marking its wares from 1759 onwards. From 1891, WEDGWOOD added the word " ENGLAND " to its standard impressed mark following the introduction of the McKinley Tariff Act in the United States, which required imported goods to indicate their country of origin. Between 1891 and 1908, pieces were typically marked with "WEDGWOOD" and a separate impressed "ENGLAND". After 1908, the marking changed to "MADE IN ENGLAND". The impressed letter mark is especially important for dating, as each letter corresponds to a production year within a specific cycle (for example: Z = 1897, Y = 1896, X = 1895). Based on the impressed marks to the underside, this vase can confidently be dated to the period between 1891 and 1897, most likely circa 1896.
Please also note the original bolt and square nut to the centre - an important authenticity feature found on complex Wedgwood trophy vases of this era, which were constructed in two sections (body and pedestal). The natural darkened patina and age-related oxidation on the brass are entirely consistent with a genuine piece approximately 130 years old. Very Good antique condition overall, with slight age-related wear consistent with age and careful use. A few small micro-chips/nibbles are present on parts of the white relief border rim. There is also a small line visible inside the neck area, which appears to be a kiln-related manufacturing firing line rather than later damage, most likely occurring during the original production process. No signs of restoration detected. Despite these minor age-related signs of wear, the vase displays beautifully and remains a highly decorative collector's piece.
