A Wedgwood Sage Green Jasper Ware Plaque' Selene Visiting Endymion' (Code 8153). A particularly fine late 20th century Wedgwood Jasper ware plaque.
It is from the Genius collection and features Selene visiting Endymion from the classical Greek story of the Moon goddess and her lover. It is based on an 18th century Wedgwood original bas relief which in turn was perhaps loosely based on a Roman sarcophagus carving from the early AD period. This wonderful plaque is from a limited edition run of just 300, and this is number 9. The plaque is a tour-de-force of ceramic skill and one of my personal favourites of Wedgwood's more recent production. The level of detail is excellent and bas relief really stands out from the green Jasper ground.
To the reverse the Wedgwood printed and impressed marks can be viewed through a cut out in the rear of the frame back. The plaque comes in its original presentation box and laminated certificate. Height 18 cms (7 inches) plaque 26.5 cms (10.5 inches) frame Width 41 cms (16.25 inches) plaque 50 cms (19.5 inches) frame Weight 5000 grams (before packing). Plaque in fine undamaged condition.Box also good with minor wear and marks. Minor natural flaws in the wood frame as you would expect.
