While the American revolution was taking place, an English potter who was renowned for his championship of the cause of freedom was actively supporting the colonists. His name was Josiah Wedgwood and he was a correspondent and admirer of Benjamin Franklin, who signed the Declaration of Independence on behalf of Pennsylvania. Early American collectors of Wedgwood included Thomas Jefferson, signatory of the Declaration for Virginia. It is fitting therefore that Wedgwood should commemorate the Bicentennial of American Independence with a specially designed collection. Famous throughout the world, Wedgwood Jasper was first produced in 1774 by Josiah Wedgwood after several thousand recorded experiments and years of research.
Many of these trial pieces have been carefully preserved and some are on display at the Wedgwood Museum at Barlaston, England. Jasper was the last ceramic body to be developed by the Father of English Potters and has been made by Wedgwood ever since.
The bas-relief ornaments are carefully applied by a skilled craftsman using a method unchanged since the days of the first Josiah Wedgwood. Loving Mug' is #298 in a limited edition of 500.
