Wedgwood Sage Green Dip Jasper Ware Bute Bowl c. Bas-Relief: The Dipping of Achilles. Size: 2 1/8" tall x 4 1/4" diameter. Marked'Wedgwood' in Serif font. Marked'Wedgwood' Only - pre 1891.

In order to forestall the prophecy of her son's early death, Thetis dipped her son Achilles in the waters of the River Styx, which held the powers of invulnerability.
Holding him by his heel, allowed a weak point where the healing waters did not wash over his body. Achilles death in battle came when a poison arrow found that heal. This 135 year old bute bowl measures 2 1/8" tall x 4 1/4" diameter and is marked'Wedgwood' Only in Serif Font which dates the piece prior to the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891. The piece is marked'42'. This is a size mark, not a date stamp.
