WEDGWOOD JASPERWARE ANTIQUE GRECIAN JARDINIERE PLANTER CACHE POT COBALT BLUE. DESCRIPTION: Today CANDYJACKS TREASURE CHEST is featuring this EXQUISITE piece of Jasperware by Wedgwood. This Grecian themed Jardiniere/Planter/Cache Pot displays applied white Jasperware done in high relief on a Cobalt Blue background. The Jasper dip is done in elegant clusters of grapes and vines supported on lions heads and the rim is adorned with in intricate band of flowers.

The Jardiniere also has in high relief (5) five of the Muses or Goddesses of Inspiration in literature, science and the arts (the daughters of Greek Mythology Zeus and Mnemosyne). The ones I believe to be depicted are Thalia (comedy and pastoral poetry - comic mask), Polyhmnia (the one of many hymns), Terpsichore (delight in dancing), Erato (love poetry - cithara, a Greek type of lyre) and finally Sappho (a tribute to outstanding poets) who was added later by Plato. Jasperware is a type of pottery first developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770's. Usually described as stoneware some have described it as a type of porcelain. It is noted for its matte and unglazed biscuit finish and is produced in a number of different colors, best known is the pale blue that has come to be known as Wedgwood Blue.

There is blue dye that has bled through at some places but truly not noticeable unless you are looking for it. There is what seems to be two manufacturing defect, it looks like a bubble in the mold on the inside and a tiny one on the outside under the bottom white rim (please see photos).
