Antique Betjemann's Patent Bookslide Coromandel Wood Brass Jasperware Plaques

  

Betjemann's patent self closing, expanding, coromandel (calamander) wood book slide with pierced and engraved brass mounts and large round blue jasperware plaques. The end of the slides each have a brass handle engraved Betjemann's Patent Self Closing Book Slide and numbered 8346. This bookslide dates from around 1870, the mid Victorian period and was retailed by Charles Henry of 22 King Street Manchester. It has an inset brass plaque in the middle on the top and a leather label on the base.

The 2 inch diameter round, Wedgwood type, blue jasper plaques are of classical scenes one is of Cupid and the Swan after drawings by Giulio Romano, a design for a stucco medallion at the Palazzo Te in Mantua, Italy. The other is of two classical Greek or Roman muses with cupid and his bow and arrow. This very attractive and beautiful quality bookslide is in very good antique condition, there is a repair to one corner, it has replacement new rubber cords, so self closes, and replacement felt to the base, some minor marks and wear from use.

This is a very decorative piece of Victorian wooden ware for the ideal for the sideboard or library.
