Wedgwood Pale Blue Dip Jasper Ware Portland Vase is believed to depict Peleus and Thetis. Peleus, a mortal, is married by Zeus to his sea-goddess daughter, Thetis. Zeus fears that if Thetis were to marry a god, their son would be more powerful than himself. Peleus and Thetis' son Achilles, being half human, would be no rival to Zeus. This 175 year old vase measures 7 tall and is marked'Wedgwood' Only which dates the piece prior to the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891.

Dating the vase comes from evidence compiled from several sources. Wedgwood - The New Illustrated Dictionary', Robin Reilly, 1995, p. This vase also has what are'so-called'commas' or'mustache' marks: two curves dashes, variously arranged, impressed in dry bodies, 1800-20. Wedgwood Jasper', Robin Reilly, 1994, p.

These marks are also described by Meteyard in 1875 as'it is evidently from about forty to sixty years old - dating the period from about 1810. And'It is, however, almost always placed under the name'. The Wedgwood Handbook', Eliza Meteyard, 1875, p.

From 1836, however, the white stoneware body was used to produce vases in several sizes with a jasper dip, in blue, green and lilac. During the 1800's the figures were often'draped', wherein the male figures, originally nude, were modestly covered to spare Victorian sensibilities. In some cases Cupid's legs are crossed for the same purpose.

That does not occur on this example. Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837, so we can presume that the draping would not have occurred until after that date.

There are many examples of early 1800 Portland Vases having been draped, including'The 1839 Portland' Vase illustrated by Wolf Mankowitz. The Portland Vase and the Wedgwood Copies', 1952, p. Based on all of this evidence, we can date the Vase to roughly c. Please take a very good look at this piece and make an offer if you're interested.
