Most likely the toughest color of Wedgewood jasperware to find today is crimson red. Produced by the Wedgewood company of England, this color was introduced in the 1880s for the first time.

Due to the manufacturing process, the red color tended to seep into the white relief applied on top for added decoration of each piece. Because of this issue, the color was discontinued sometime between 1891 in the early 1900s. My research indicates that a very small batch was produced in 1910, and in a final attempt to perfect this color, the company reissued it in the mid-1920s to the early 1930s. The pieces produced in the early years were marked Wedgwood and England on the bottom. Any example produced prior to 1891 showed no country of origin on the bottom. Because of the scarcity of this color, these items usually command top dollar in todays market depending on condition. I believe this shape to be either a tankard mug or beer stein.

I believe it was definitely produced for use as the decoration is somewhat less detailed than other shapes. Marked on the bottom of Wedgwood/England which would indicate production sometime after 1891, most likely mid/late 1890s. I have not owned nor seen this shape before. The mug stands just under 5 1/2 tall and measures 5 1/2 from front rim to back of handle.

The base spans 3 5/8 across. I can find no chips, cracks, damage or repairs to this item. I will mention tiny anneal lines in some of the white putti which is common for these early pieces. I can see little if any bleeding of the red into the white decoration, I will mention several areas have slight discoloration due to age and use. The inside is very clean with no discoloration, the bottom has slight staining. Wedgewood and England stamped in the bottom. A super and rare example for any advanced jasperware collection!
