This is an English Black Basalt Portrait Medallion Of Anaceon (582 BC 485 BC), made by Wedgwood in 1780 - 1795. Anaceon was a Greek lyric poet, noteable for his drinking songs and hymns. He is one of the Nine Lyric or Melic Poets who were a canonical group of ancient Greek poets esteemed by the scholars of Hellenistic Alexandria as worthy of critical study. Medallion's dimensions: 2 7/8" (7cm) high, 2 5/16" (6cm) wide. Excellent antique condition, no chips no cracks.
