This is an English Black Basalt Portrait Medallion Of Anaceon (582 BC 485 BC), made by Wedgwood in 1780 - 1795. Anaceon was a Greek lyric poet, noteable for his drinking songs and hymns. He is one of the Nine Lyric or Melic Poets who were a canonical group of ancient Greek poets esteemed by the scholars of Hellenistic Alexandria as worthy of critical study. Medallion's dimensions: 2 7/8" (7cm) high, 2 5/16" (6cm) wide. Excellent antique condition, no chips no cracks.The pictures do not do justice to the actual piece. It is black in real life. Item has been described to the best of our knowledge.
