An Antique Wedgwood Green Jasper Ware Adam Smith Tassie Medallion Pendant  An Antique Wedgwood Green Jasper Ware Adam Smith Tassie Medallion Pendant
An unusual antique Wedgwood medallion pendant. It is of oval form and green jasper dip body. It is set with a high bas relief of Adam Smith (the Scottish father of modern economics). To the bottom of the relief is text reading' Adam Smith in his 64th year - 1787. It is also impressed Tassie to the right of the main text, for James Tassie (the modeller of the portrait).

James Tassie was one of the most celebrated modellers and engravers of the 18th century producing many notable works and exhibited at the Royal Academy for many years. The medallion is of slightly convex form and in green jasper dip. The top is fitted with a white metal hanger with loop which is quite unusual.

The item would be considered a too large to wear as general jewellery but perhaps it was just used on special occasion such as a mayoral chain would be. The reverse has the Wedgwood England impressed marks dating it around 1900. The original was produced in 1787, and the bas relief appears identical to the original, so it is likely this was produced from the original Tassie mould but in the late 19th century.

No notable faults, minor wear to metalwork. Height 10 cms (4 inches) excluding hanger.

Width 7.5 cms (3.3 inches). Weight 122 grams (before packing). New items are added frequently to Antiques England, please remember to check back regularly!
